Community Seafood Initiative
Innovative Leadership Training Program 2009

Just about everyone could use some assistance in developing leadership skills and abilities. Today’s seafood industry members are looked to as leaders during these challenging times of transition regardless of whether the problem is seafood production, management, marketing, or public relations. . Being thrust into the spotlight can be daunting, but if equipped with the right skills, individuals with leadership ability can excel. For this reason the Community Seafood Initiative has teamed up with Portland State University’s Food Industry Leadership Center to provide a unique leadership training program for individuals involved in the food and seafood industry.

The program has three parts and supports emerging leaders in the seafood industry regardless of age, background or level of education. The only requirements are involvement with some segment of the Oregon seafood industry and having a serious desire to improve one’s leadership abilities and skills.

Part 1

The first part of the program is primarily focused on a variety of seafood industry issues and takes place during an afternoon and evening session at the Food Innovation Center in Portland, Oregon. The February 21st program will introduce emerging leaders to regional and national seafood industry issues. Speakers will include existing seafood leaders and CSI partners. Topics during this half day workshop will include:

  • Challenges and opportunities for Pacific Northwest seafood industries and coastal communities
  • The role of business/community leadership in addressing challenges and realizing opportunities
  • Retaining and fostering leadership in seafood sectors/communities

An evening dinner event at the Food Innovation Center will continue with this theme and highlight the activities of the Community Seafood Initiative.

Part 2

The second part of the program begins the following day and runs through Feb 22. This week-long training session is sponsored by PSU’s Food Industry Leadership Center and takes place at the Skamania Lodge located in Stevenson, Washington. The program will focus on the broader food industry with leadership skill development. Agenda topics include: financial management, increasing customer loyalty, diversity, supply and logistics management, aquiring and developing talent, leadership and team development, and managing change, transition and conflict. For details please visit the program’s website at www.foodleadership.pdx.edu.

Part 3

Part three of the program encourages the student to apply the skills they learned at the workshops. Over the next nine months students are expected to implement a project that utilizes their business and leadership abilities. . The scope and scale of the project is entirely the choice of the individual student but could include their business, community, and seafood industry. Individuals will be expected to present a summary of their project at a special meeting of the Community Seafood Initiative that will be held at the Seafood Consumer Center in November 2009.

Details

If an applicant is selected for this program the Community Seafood Initiative will cover the $3,900 cost for each individual to attend PSU’s training program. In addition, CSI will provide each student with a $1,200 stipend to cover remaining costs and support the application of leadership skills. CSI will sponsor a total of five individuals to participate in this leadership training program.
